I celebrated my 23rd birthday on three different occasions. Two of them were surprises! ❤ I feel the immense love from everyone. I cannot thank everyone enough for their effort for making my birthday so memorable. I didn’t really expect or anticipate any celebrations. First, there’s a lot of work to complete, essays, readings, writing up my chapters for my thesis. So I wasn’t in the celebratory mood. However, it changed when Sarah and Rupini came to surprise me!
I went through an ordeal of mum and sister not allowing me to shower and sleep. I normally prepare to shower and sleep at around 8pm – 9pm. I also like to sleep early. But that night, we went out for ice-cream. Turns out these two fellas planned a surprise for me! I was so undone, even swept my bangs aside already. 😂 That shows that I am done with the day, when I don’t care about my appearance anymore. I was so surprised because I met them two days before this and we were only planning to meet later this month. Sarah’s beautifully crafted the card! I love it!
My actual birthday! I went to Pavilion with my mum and sister to catch a film. Unfortunately the seats left were only the first and second row, so we decided not to watch it. Then we went shopping for a bit. We went to Tonkatsu by Wa Kitchen for lunch. This is one of my favourite Japanese places. It was delicious!
Also went to TWG to get some macaroon because I wanted some 😋 So worth the price! 💕 Would definitely go back for more again!
Since there’s already cake at home, mum insisted I get a mini cake from TWG. I chose the big macaroon looking one. 💖
Isn’t it so pretty? 😍
Just as I thought my birthday was over, my classmates surprised me in the afternoon! This surprise was a complete shock to me. I saw them carrying the cake from the refection, but I really appreciate their thoughtful surprise and all the gifts! ❤️ The cake was really really good, so rich in chocolate!
Flowers and a neon pink S notebook. They know me so well! 😂
This is my absolute favourite part. CONFETTI. I wanted to keep it like it is forever! But obviously it’s not possible, I cleaned it up today. I was so happy to walk into the confetti room this morning. 😌
The colours just makes me so happy! And it fell perfectly on my desk.
So much colours. The room was finally colourful for once! 😂
Group picture! ❤️ I asked my supervisor to help us take this picture, and he said that this is quite an unusual request, when he said that, he also got this nice candid photo of us. 👌🏼
Quite a few staff from school also wished me a happy birthday, including both my supervisors. All because I had to explain why the room had confetti all over. 😅
I had such an amazing birthday. So much thanks to everyone who left me messages, gave me gifts, and spent time to celebrate with me! ❤️
Currently down with a sore throat, on and off fever, and a slight cough. I think all these is due to the fact that I was sitting in an incredibly cold seminar room from 9am – 5pm, for three days. Not only I was sitting in the cold room, I was going in and out several times for food and class activities. I should’ve taken a jacket or something. Oh well, I’m recovering now. Speaking of the three days, I crashed the Australian unit, the class came to Malaysia to conduct research in Segamat, Johor. I learned new research methods and made new friends! The classes were really interactive! There were three meals a day, morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea; this is really good, in a way, it’s like a little refresher. I’d love to follow them to Segamat to see how they get on with the research but unfortunately I’ve my own work to do.
Anyways, June. The semester break started. I had (am still having) half a break, because I need to conduct my interviews and transcribe interviews and all that fun stuff. So I still went to school, but on days I don’t have much to do, I stay at home and chill. I’ve conducted three interviews so far and it all went very well. 😀
June was also the month where I ate out a lot. So, this post will be flooded with food pictures. 😋 The pictures are all in random order. Hehe.
The steam bread looks underwhelming but it is super delicious. 😋
Nothing too exciting happened in June. Normally during the semester breaks I’d go on a holiday but this year I have to focus on my interviews and how my thesis is progressing. I received my results yesterday and I am incredibly happy with my grades. I just have to work harder next semester to maintain the results that I am happy with. 😇
I haven’t done a haul post in forever. In fact, I haven’t done a proper post apart from the monthly updates.
I had zero intention of buying anything from SASA, we went there because my sister wanted to get a clay mask and after an hour there, we came out with two paper bags of beauty products.
I’ve always wanted to try out products from Chosungah 22, but it can be pricy, so finally when there’s a sale, I obviously had to get some stuff! From left to right.
Chosungah 22, Fresh Ade Cleanser Peach 320, RM27.70 after 70% off. The tester smells super delicious!
Chosungah 22, Brow Dong Gong Minn Brow Maker, RM20.70 after 70% off.
Bifesta, Bright Up Foaming Whip Cleanser, RM20.70 I think, usual price is RM24. Bought this because the product looks super interesting, plus the packaging is really eye-catching!
Mask galore up next.
2 packs for RM50, 10 sheet masks in one box.
Soo Beauté Jeju Cactus Mask.
Soo Beauté Jeju Dandelion Mask.
Soo Beauté Pore Refresh Black Bubble Sheet. RM78 for 10 sheets. This is slightly pricier as it has more benefits than a regular sheet mask. I tried this last night and it was really refreshing, I am not sure if the blackheads really came out but it felt nice. Bubbles actually started to appear after five mins of putting on the mask, I left the mask for a good half an hour, even though the instruction suggested to leave it on for 10 – 15 minutes.
Two more boxes of masks, ten sheets in each box, the deal was buy one at RM45, and another one for an additional RM1. Basically, RM46 for two boxes.
Soo Beauté Whiten-Vital Ampoule Mask.
Soo Beauté Purify-Vital Ampoule Mask.
The amount of mask may seem a lot but I apply masks almost everyday. Some people say its not good but its working well for me, so I’ll just continue the routine. Next post is the customary monthly update post. 😉
Checked off quite a bit of my to-do list; group assignment is over, which I am incredibly happy about! I pray there won’t be another group assignment, please.
Other things I completed in May, received ethics clearance for my research.
I’ve also completed the presentation which I’ve been dreading since day one of the semester. I was in a lot of pressure to do well because I was told that my performance was not only a reflection on my work but it is also a reflection on my supervisors because they are the ones who are guiding me. Therefore, I HAVE to make sure I do well for the sake of my supervisors and myself. Fortunately, I did well, according to my supervisors. Getting positive feedbacks makes me really happy and pleased. I shall keep doing whatever I am doing! I also got a few participants for my research, I’m so thankful!
Other than my Monday to Friday (sometimes, if I have nothing much to do, I stay at home, otherwise, it’s the usual Mon -Fri), 10am – 5pm school life, I haven’t done much. Did some shopping here and there. I have literally no boundaries when it comes to shopping, it’s not like I need new clothes, but I still buy them..
Anyways, I also had a few catch-up sessions with friends. I don’t have much to do this week.. The most I’ve done is reading a few journals and revising my chapters. There’s a submission on Monday!
One of the four stray cats at the back of my house. She’s so pretty!
Hope June will be fun and fruitful since I’ll be starting my fieldwork this month!
Almost a month since graduating! Graduation week was fun, got to see my friends again, and finally got the degree. Two years of hard work! Then it was back to my thesis. Hehe. I sat at the very first row, means there was absolutely no chance for me to play on my phone without looking disrespectful. So I did not use my phone at all throughout the entire ceremony apart from checking for the time.. My previous graduation, I was on my phone a lot.. Selfies and all that fun stuff, but this time around it felt way more serious. Hmm? I was planning to write an entire post on graduation, the before and during and all that exciting stuff. But I was so caught up with my work that I delayed that and now I have no mood to write that anymore..
Pictures will do I guess!
Back to the desk!
On my thesis, I’m on the right track. My supervisors, other lecturers and classmates often tell that to me, which I am very pleased with. This means I have time to edit and make changes if I have to. I’m sure I have to.. But the process of reading, writing, getting the right sources is actually quite nice. I’m that strange student who enjoys the working process. Is it strange? It’s been a couple of months and I’m already learning so much. On ethical issues, to consistently arranging meetings with supervisors to make sure I am on the right track to writing and editing my work especially punctuations (which I have actually been reminded of again and again from one of my supervisors since 2015, I definitely have to get on to that this time around). I felt extremely sorry for my supervisors who had to read through all that grammar mistakes. All that scribble on the paper.. I am learning to fix them! One of my supervisors said its quite “enjoyable” to him that we had that meeting where he explained to me about punctuations and grammar. He said it’s because other students also make the same mistakes but he doesn’t get to explain it to them. Probably because his classes are really big classes, it’s really quite difficult to explain one by one. He also recommended me to read a book titled, ‘Eats, Shoots and Leaves’, it’s quite an easy read in comparison to the everyday grammar books. Meanwhile, my main supervisor whom I make a point of meet with him every week, he very often tells me to go for a holiday because I have already done a lot at this stage. I would love to go but I’ve no idea where to go. Hmm. Normally I answer “I’m good” to how are you questions, but once I said, “I’m okay”, my supervisor seemed concerned almost and asked me what’s wrong. Nothing wrong, on that day I just felt as though I haven’t been doing much that week. Then again, I have come to terms with myself that sometimes I am too harsh on myself. Is it a good trait or a bad trait?
I have also heavily decorated my desk, which I love. A lot of Audrey Hepburn, Moomin and other random stuff I like. By next week, I have to submit my ethics applications, which I have pretty much completed. Just waiting for my supervisor to go through that. Then there’s the presentation where the entire faculty will come and watch (or judge, I don’t know, apparently there will be mean comments or let’s consider them constructive criticism?). Since the induction program, this one particular presentation has been one of the most pressured assessments of the entire unit, despite it being only 10%. Of course, we shouldn’t undermine this 10%, it could bring a Distinction to a High Distinction. I’ve been told that this presentation is the reflection of our supervisors and also the school because at the end of the day we going out to conduct the research under the name of the school. Definitely there’s a lot of pressure there.
Apart from my academic life, I have been shopping way more than I need to. I just cannot resist all those sales. These few weeks, there have been a lot of public holidays. Normally, it’s on a Monday, which means, long weekends! And the next public holiday after Labour Day falls on a Wednesday, which is pretty nice. But, I normally have a lecture on Wednesday evenings; so I guess there’ll either be a replacement or an online class perhaps.
That quote is true. It may take some time but hard work definitely pays off. On my last post, I mentioned about my application for the honours degree and a couple of weeks back, I finally received the offer letter. I was so excited! Then there was some conflict regarding the supervisors which made me so stressed out for about two weeks but fortunately, it is all sorted now.
I’ve come to the realisation that I am quite critical of myself, always doubting myself, thinking I’m not good enough. This needs to stop, so I’m gonna give myself some credit for working hard to achieve the grades I needed to apply for the degree.
Hard work pays off and it surprises you. All applications have a chance of getting a scholarship, I was not expecting much from it. When I was reading my offer letter, it had no mention about the scholarship, so, I thought I didn’t get it. I wasn’t too sad about that, but then I found out later that the school had yet to discuss that, so I thought, maybe there still is a chance. Last week I found out that I got a full scholarship from the school to do this degree. I didn’t know how to react, heck, I didn’t fully understand what the letter said when I first read it. I did not expect it at all. I worked hard to get into the course but this scholarship feels like it’s a reward for the hard work.
Another about 12 days till the beginning of the semester. Time to work harder!
Spent my first couple of days of January in Singapore with my family and relatives, it was rather productive thinking back, we went cycling, morning exercises, it was quite an outdoorsy trip, we even visited the zoo! This picture was one of the views we saw while cycling!
I also exercised more throughout the entire 2016 which I am very happy about, it’s nothing extreme but glad I am moving around here and there a little. Other than going to Singapore, I did not do very much in January, it was still my summer break! Oh, I did dye my hair to a ridiculously light colour, of course at that time I loved it, as of now, maybe not..
It was Chinese New Year. It was also the time due to an incident, which made me reflect and I realised the importance of exercising, family and health, so that was something I will always keep with me. Chinese New Year was fine, as I grow older, I tend to lose the excitement of the festivities.
February also marked my last month of my summer break, which means I started my first semester of my final year. The semester officially starts on the 29 February, however, I have no classes on Mondays which was such a blessing! So I only had classes from Tuesday to Fridays, and even so, on Tuesday and Thursday, I only had one lecture and on Wednesdays, I had on lecture and one tutorial, while, on Friday it was a little packed but it worked out fine, had one lecture and three tutorials!
I officially started my third semester, honestly, I was quite afraid initially because I had two classes with the same lecturer, I’ve never been taught be that lecturer before, I kept thinking, what if the lecturer is not a good lecturer, and I’ll have to attend the classes, four times a week.. My friend had taken a class with this lecturer and she said the lecturer is cool, I was still kinda meh, but fortunately it turned out, the lecturer is the best lecturer I had so far. I asked a million questions and the lecturer gladly helped. Phew! Because I had to swap my units, I took a class I never thought I would take, it was a gender studies class, I didn’t want to take up any gender studies unit because I didn’t think I would like it. It was quite challenging actually! I’ve never taken any gender units previously, so jumping to a third-year gender unit was probably not a good idea, though I am rather happy with my grade!
Apart from my academic life, my sister’s hard work joining the EXO contest paid off as she won two tickets to the concert! I attended the concert with her and it was very cool! I didn’t know all the songs, heheh. We were really quite close to the members since it was in the rock zone. I also met Lee Kwang Soo again, he came to KL for the new Samsung S7 Edge roadshow, as usual, so handsome and humble.
In April, my sister and I had our 10-seconds of fame, haha. We also met Sandara Park, formerly a member of 2NE1 when she came here to promote for Moonshot! That was fun! April was pretty standard, school, assignments, had some good food, did a little shopping, that kinda stuff.
Not much happened in the fifth month of 2016, it was the end of the semester. I decided to have bangs again and also dyed my hair to a darker colour. Mostly it was just completing assignments and submitting assignments, other than that, there were nothing special.
To make up for the lack of events in May, here’s an excerpt from a conversation I had with a friend. A little story behind it, I was telling her we had gotten an extension for an assignment, like me, she took two classes with the same lecturer, so she got confused. Hahaha.
Since it was the beginning of another semester break, I just enjoyed my holiday and watched a whole lot of films, a lot of the films I watched starred Audrey Hepburn. I love her, so iconic! Also, visited Singapore (once again), and also visited Ipoh and Kuala Sepetang! Kuala Sepetang was quite pretty, I don’t particularly like to be on waters, boats, that kinda stuff, so I was scared at first, then I got used to it cause we spent many hours on the boat waiting for dolphins, which fortunately we managed to see!
The trip to Singapore overlaps to July, we went on the 30th of June until the 4th of July. Another point to note is we started feeding the stray cats behind our house, unfortunately by the time I am writing this, the kitten has died. July was also the month we visited Siem Reap! (Yes, I am aware I am super super behind on my blog post about that trip..) It was a eye opening trip!
That month, I won a basket of Royce chocolates through a contest held by Buro24/7, so I am extremely grateful! I started my final semester of my degree course on the 25th of July.
Once again, I was rather concerned about two classes, one was a class completely out of my comfort zone, it was related to international studies, but thankfully, I didn’t have to touch too much on international studies, instead, I got to utilise my journalism skills, which could use a bit of polishing.. Haha. The other class I was afraid of was because of the lecturer, the lecturer is known to have high standards and boring classes, honestly, during break time for that lectures, my friends and I have walked out of the lecture multiple times, sometimes for McDonalds and others was for I can’t even remember now. At the end of the entire semester, my highest grade was from this class, either I must’ve done really well or the lecturer was nice that semester?
I kept changing my timetable and I finally decided on one which I thought would be a challenge, I allocated all my tutorials on Fridays, back-to-back that is. 9am – 10am, 10am – 11am, 11am – 12pm, and finally 2pm – 3pm. Initially, it was tiresome to go to another class right after another, it was also a challenge to swap focus, for instance, I would be in the 9am – 10am class discussing an issue related to class with my classmates, and then I would have to go attend the 10am stardom class, I would still be pondering about the 9am class on the discussions we had, then only I would actually stay focused in the stardom class, right when I am 100% focused on the stardom class, because one hour is relatively short to discuss the many elements of a film, I would then go to my next class, sexuality class, which requires me to read before hand, I tried my very best to read before I attend! Fridays can be tiring, but it was somewhat rewarding. I also managed to have a mid-week break with Wednesdays off, so glad I had Wednesdays off! That gave me plenty of time to complete assignments! This also meant on I only had one lecture Tuesdays and Thursdays and two on Mondays. I love how flexible the timetable can be.
This was also my birthday month, I turned 22. I didn’t have a big celebration, just had some cake with my family. I also attended Buro24/7 x Sulwhasoo event with Sarah, my sister and my sister’s friend, Aliah!
September was another one of those months where there wasn’t much events. By this time of the year, I had already spoken to a couple of lecturers about the options to continuing studying, there’s honours degree which adds on to the currently degree I am pursuing, or the masters degree. I pretty much wanted to do the masters because the honours degree had a higher entry requirement, I thought I wouldn’t be able to achieve that, then after more discussions with my lecturer, I decided to aim for the entry requirement for the honours degree. I was constantly worried I would not be able to attain the required grade, I kept wishing for December 5 to arrive quickly because that was the date the grades would be released.
It was also my mother’s birthday, we went flowers to her! ❤
October is the month where it was time to give 100% effort to all the assignments, it was also the month where I realised I have made such good friends from the international studies class, so glad we got along!
Also, Afi and I decided to take part in as many events as we can in school because it was our last semester and we wanted to cherish it. We took a LOT of photos, we even purposely went back to school just to take photos, and then we went shopping. Haha. It was also the end of my final semester.
Fell in love with Fishbowl, it’s so good!
There was two new little kittens, so we started feeding them as well!
I decided to spend more time with Afi before she leaves, so we went for ice-creams and shopping! And of course took more pictures, heheh.
Mid-November, I went to Seoul, Korea with my family. I can’t say I have an entirely good trip unfortunately, but it was still fun!
I took it down mid-flight to hug it then when we were gonna approach for landing, the stewardess asked if I wanted to store it on the overhead cabin and I was like, “Okay..” Haha, turns out she likes Moomin too!
Beginning of December, I went to Pavilion with my grandma and spent some time with her, that was nice. Christmas decorations were up, it was so festive.
My final results also came out, I am so so happy with my results, all my hard word has paid off. This means I managed to achieve my main goal, to be able to apply for the honours degree. I then started on my proposal for the application. I gave some thank you gifts to the lecturer that guided me throughout this entire year and also the staff who I have bothered way too much!
I finally met up with my two crazy friends from my diploma class after a year or two I think!
I also started to have greek yogurt with honey and strawberries again!
In conclusion, 2016 was quite good actually, did some travelling, completed my degree course, made more friends, spent time with family, it was memorable. ❤ I have many things to be thankful for.
Four days into 2017, I cannot wait to get news regarding my application for the honours degree, I wish and hope all goes well. May 2017 be healthful, wishful, joyful, insightful, wonderful and effortful.
